action

Kate Malvern grew up in a Spanish garrison and has been without a mother since she was twelve. After the death of her father, she has to earn a living as an educator . However, because she is very beautiful, she is fired from her job because the son of the house tried to kiss her. She finds temporary shelter with her now married nanny, Sarah Nidd.

Under pressure from her father-in-law, Sarah writes, without Kate's knowledge, to her father's half-sister, Lady Minerva Broome, who arrives a few days later to take Kate on an extended visit to Staplewood, the lonely manor house of the Broome of Staplewood. There she showered Kate with gifts and all kinds of kindnesses that left Kate with mixed feelings.

The life of the Broomes is sad and unhappy. Sir Timothy, the sick man of the house, wants nothing but to be left in peace. Torquil, the 19 year old son and heir, has strange manners and is constantly guarded, Dr. Delabole, the doctor of the house, is involved everywhere, the servants are divided into hostile camps, and Lady Broome is enthroned above everything and rules with an iron hand.

Step by step, Kate recognizes the truths and connections and, after some misunderstandings, finds in Philipp Broome a confidante and ally and her future happiness.
