Gilding cushion in use

The gilding pad is a tool for processing loose metal leaf , such as gold leaf .

It is a padded board covered with cowhide or suede with a strap on the bottom. Due to the very wind-sensitive leaf metal, the gilding cushion is often also available with a windbreak on three sides.

It finds v. a. use as an aid to gilding . The leaf metal is carefully lifted from the so-called booklet onto the pillow with the gilding knife and cut here.
