Traffic density

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The traffic density is a parameter in traffic planning and is used to assess the quality, performance and safety of a traffic flow. Furthermore, it represents the basis for a traffic engineering dimension.

definition

As traffic density refers to the number of transport elements of traffic flow per unit distance at a time. In this case one speaks of the density of a traffic flow.

Traffic density (e.g. vehicles per kilometer)
Number of traffic elements (e.g. vehicles) on a route
Route section (for example in kilometers)
Traffic volume (e.g. in vehicles per hour)
Travel speed (for example in kilometers per hour)

application

The traffic density has a great influence on the traffic flow. It influences driving behavior via the speed, since a sufficient safety distance must be maintained from the vehicle in front . Together with other parameters, such as traffic volume or speed, a fundamental diagram of the traffic flow can be created.
