Transfiguration Church (Herbel)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Transfiguration Church ( Albanian  Kisha e Shpërfytyrimit ) is an Orthodox church in the east Albanian village of Herbel in the municipality of Dibra . It has been a recognized cultural monument since May 30, 1970. The church is protected because it dates from pre-Ottoman times and has wall paintings, but it is no longer used.

The church was built from stone and lime mortar in the 12th or 14th centuries.

Every year on August 19, local residents - including Muslims - make a pilgrimage to the church. Traditionally, they then spend a night inside the church, sleeping and praying there. According to their beliefs, this is to cure diseases.
