history

Verlagsanstalt Handwerk GmbH (VH) was founded on June 21, 1926 as the “Verlagsanstalt des Westfälischen Handwerks” by the three chambers of handicrafts in Arnsberg, Bielefeld and Dortmund. Your seat is Dortmund. VH continues to perform its special task, which was determined at that time, namely the production and sale of “publishing works, books and forms relating to the craft”.

The publishing house survived the National Socialist takeover unscathed and was able to record increasing economic success in the first years of Nazi rule. In 1939 a change of name took place: The publishing house of the Westphalian handicrafts became the publishing house of the West German handicraft GmbH. In 1943, however, the Handwerks-Zeitung with 23,000 subscribers - an economic mainstay of the publishing company - had to be closed.

Four years after the end of the war, the publishing house published the first post-war craft newspaper in 1949 as the official organ of the Arnsberg, Bielefeld, Detmold, Dortmund and Düsseldorf chambers. Since then, the Deutsches Handwerksblatt has undergone a number of name changes and is now the official organ of 16 chambers of crafts with a total circulation of over 300,000 copies.

In 1970 the Wirtschafts-Werbe-Gesellschaft WWG was founded as a subsidiary of the publishing house. She took over the processing of the VH advertising business. A year later the VH got its current name: The publishing house of the Westdeutschen Handwerk GmbH became the publishing house Handwerk GmbH.

In 1980 VH moved to the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf . Here, the number of specialist titles in the magazine sector rose to eight, including “Kunst und Handwerk” and “Neues Glas”, a German-American edition. Overall, the house expanded its program in the direction of new communication technologies and training and further education literature and is becoming a modern media service provider.

At the beginning of 2013, VH took over both magazines and book titles from Kleffmann Verlag in Bochum.

The publisher's program currently includes the three specialist magazines, Gebäudehülle.net, RTS-Magazin Rollladen Tore Sun Protection incl. Forum Wintergärten, and the German Trade Journal .

In the field of training and further education literature, the VH publishes “Sackmann - the textbook for the master craftsman's examination”, a standard work in master’s preparation. The associated learning portal enables master class students and lecturers to expand their lessons and prepare for exams digitally. In addition, the VH also offers teaching materials for further technical training and further education, such as the business economist in the trade and the latest trade qualification for certified commercial specialist.

Overall, the digital offering includes websites and apps. With Germany's Power People , an internet casting for a calendar with young craftspeople, and the associated choice of Mister and Miss Handwerk, VH is also entering the event sector.
