The Vermont Progressive Party ( German : Vermonts Progressive Party) is a political party in the United States that operates exclusively in the US state of Vermont . It was founded in 1999 and can be considered social democratic . She has six members in the House of Representatives and three seats in the Vermont Senate . history

The party grew out of supporters of the independent politician and then Mayor of Burlington , Bernie Sanders . Some of Sanders' supporters formed the Progressive Coalition to support other independent politicians. In 1990 Terry Bouricius was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives. In 1999, the Progressive Party was finally formally founded.

In the 2000 presidential election , the Progressive Party nominated the Green candidate , Ralph Nader .
