Veronika Schäpers

Veronika Schäpers (* 1969 in Gescher ) is a German bookbinder and book artist .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1988, Veronika Schäpers completed an apprenticeship as a bookbinder, followed by studying painting and book at the University of Art and Design Burg Giebichenstein, Halle / Saale , which she graduated with a diploma in 1996 . Also in 1996, Veronika Schäpers received a three-month scholarship at the Centro del bel Libro , Ascona , Switzerland.

From 1997 to 1998 Schäpers learned how to manufacture and handle Japanese paper (washi) with the Japanese paper merchant, writer and publisher Naoaki Sakamoto in Tokyo .

In the production of her art books, Veronika Schäpers uses a wide variety of contemporary and ancient types of paper of Western and East Asian origins. With her materials and reproduced artist texts, she often builds a bridge between German and Japanese content and craftsmanship.

Since completing her training in 1998, Veronika Schäpers worked as a freelance book artist in Tokyo and then in Berlin. During her professional career, she has received numerous prizes, including the MCBA Prize, Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Minneapolis, MN 2009, the bel libro innovation prize, Ascona, Switzerland 2003 and 2009, and the New Kunsthaus Ahrenshoop art prize , Germany 2007.

Her art books are included in numerous large collections and museums, including the British Library in London, the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and other institutions around the world.
