The Regulation (EEC) No. 1408/71 acts like a big social security agreement between all Member States of the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) and the Switzerland .

The core idea is that you do not lose your health insurance cover and your pension entitlements when you move to another Member State. This is intended to remove obstacles to the free movement of workers .

Regulation (EEC) No. 1408/71 is of great importance for the everyday life of EU citizens as it regulates areas such as health insurance , unemployment and pensions .

Regulation (EEC) No. 1408/71 results, among other things, in the introduction of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) , which replaces the foreign health insurance certificate (form E111).

Regulation (EEC) No. 1408/71 was replaced by Regulation (EC) No. 883/2004 i. V. m. of Regulation (EC) No. 987/2009 replaced. However, it remains in force and remains valid for the purposes specified in Art. 90 Para. 1 lit. a) to c) Regulation (EC) No. 883/2004.

The implementation of this regulation is regulated in a further regulation (No. 574/72 (EEC), see below).
