The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan ( Azerbaijani Azərbaycan Respublikasının Müdafiə Nazirliyi ) is the defense department of the Republic of Azerbaijan with direct responsibility for the Azerbaijani armed forces .

Responsibilities

The Ministry is responsible for protecting against external threats, safeguarding national integrity, participating in peace missions and counter-terrorism as well as monitoring the territorial waters in the Caspian Sea and the airspace concerned. The Minister of Defense and the Commander of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces are appointed by the President of Azerbaijan.

The current defense minister is Safar Abiyev .
