List of the most important treaties and agreements of the Cold War:

NTBT (Nuclear Test Ban Treaty), 1963:

  • Treaty banning nuclear weapons tests in the atmosphere, in space and in or under water

SALT I ( Strategic Arms Limitation Talks ), 1972:

  • Limiting missile defense systems
  • Requirements for compliance with the limitation provisions
  • Temporary agreement on the number of land- and sea-based ICBMs

CSCE (Conference for Security and Cooperation in Europe), 1973:

  • Convergence of the blocs in Europe
  • Formulation of the principles that serve European security
  • Elaboration of guidelines for more intensive cooperation (economy, technology, environment, improvement of cultural human relationships)

MBFR negotiations (Mutual Balanced Force Reductions), 1973:

  • Reduction of conventional forces
  • Arms control

SALT II , 1979:

  • Limiting the number of each type and sub-type of strategic launch vehicle
  • Destruction of all vehicles that exceed the prescribed number

NATO double resolution , 1979:

  • Production of Pershing-2 missiles and cruise missiles
  • If the START negotiations are broken off, the weapons will be stationed

INF Treaty (Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces), 1987:

  • Elimination of all land- and sea-based medium-range missiles between 500 km and 5500 km range

Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (KSE), 1990:

  • Reduction of conventional armed forces
  • Verification of degradation

START Treaty (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty), 1991:

  • Reduction of land and sea-based long-range weapons with a range of more than 5500 km by 50%
