The Sino-Japanese Peace Treaty ( Chinese中華民國 與 日本國 間 和平 條約 / 中华民国 与 日本国 间 和平 条约Pinyin Zhōnghuá Mínguó yù Rìbĕn Guójiàn Hépíng Tiáoyuē; Japanese 日本国 と 中華民国 と の 間 の 平和 条約 , Nihon- koku to Chūka-mingoku to no aida no heiwa jōyaku ), also known as the Taipei Treaty , was signed between Japan and the Republic of China on April 28, 1952 .

prehistory

The treaty became necessary because the signatories of the San Francisco Treaty could not agree on whether the People's Republic of China or the Republic of China in Taiwan were the legitimate successors of the Republic of China . Pressure from the USA forced Japan to conclude a separate peace treaty with the Republic of China Chiang Kai-sheks , also to officially end the state of war .

In the treaty, which is similar in wording and terms to the Treaty of San Francisco, Japan waived all ownership claims in Taiwan , the Spratly Islands , the Pescadors, and the Paracel Islands . In return, the Republic of China waived any reparation claims against Japan. In addition, all contracts concluded between China and Japan before November 12, 1941, including the Shimonoseki Treaty, were declared invalid.
