Usage names of the United States Navy
The petty officers (PO) of the US Navy have, in addition to their rank ( rate , pay level), a usage designation ( rating ). This usage designation indicates the specialization or use. The equivalent system of the other US armed forces is called Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). White badges are worn with the Navy Blue uniform and the daily service uniform and black badges are worn with the white uniform (see example illustration).
Initial and continuing education
The full service title of a petty officer is made up of two titles, on the one hand the salary level and on the other hand the designation. A "Petty Officer Third Class" whose usage name is "Machinist's Mate" is called a "Machinist's Mate Third Class".
They receive their application designation either through graduation from a corresponding school or through practical training in the field of application ("on-the-job training"). In order to be promoted or to increase their pay level, a PO must pass further training and corresponding examinations in its use.
