Vetkoek ( Afrikaans for "fat cake") is a deep-fried dish of the Cape cuisine in South Africa and Namibia .

Vetkoek is made from flour , water , sugar and yeast . The dough is fermented for a day and then shaped into balls, which are then fried. Vetkoek is usually eaten filled as breakfast , as a snack or as a dessert with tea or coffee. The filling is often hearty, but it can also be sweet. Vetkoek without a filling are usually referred to as magwinya , koeksisters are a dessert made from a similar but sweet dough.
