Koeksister , also Koeksuster , is a deep-fried pastry that is braided into a braid , which is pulled through a special syrup and dried after it has been baked . The word and recipe are of Boer origin and are very common in Namibia and South Africa. Koeksister is derived from Afrikaans or Dutch "koek" (= cake) and from sissen (= fry). A Koeksister is consumed as a sweet dessert or simply in between.
