Wrestling

The wrestling department of VfL goes back to the Neckargartach athletes' club, which was founded in 1924 and was initially known for its weightlifters. After the club was founded after the Second World War, the department produced successful athletes. In the 1950s Werner Merz was a multiple Württemberg champion. Heini Schmoll was German junior runner-up in 1958, Georg Odor was German junior champion and junior world runner-up in freestyle in 1979, Dirk Petzold was junior runner-up in 1983. 1985 was the first time a VfL wrestler stood on the podium at the German championships with featherweight Jürgen Koch in freestyle as third. He was followed by Lars Petzold , who was one of the most successful German heavyweights in freestyle for several years. In 1988 and 1990 he took second place at the German championships, third places followed in 1991 and 1994. Dirk Petzold followed in his footsteps with third place in 1996. Lars Petzold also took second place in 1995 in the Greco-Roman style at the German championships. Another runner-up followed in 1999, which Dirk Petzold now won in super heavyweight freestyle.

The VfL team rose to the 2nd Bundesliga South in 2002. After an excellent second place in the 2003 season, however, the relegation took place in 2004.
