The Via Krupp is a historic serpentine path on the south coast of the Italian island of Capri .

description

The pedestrian link carved into the steep slope of Monte Castiglione is 1346.60 meters long, three meters wide and is now a tourist attraction. It was created by the German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp ; he was regularly on the island in the winter months at the turn of the century . Krupp took over the majority of the financing of the plant with 25,000 Italian lire . The construction of Via Krupp began in 1900 and was completed in 1902, shortly before Krupp's death on November 22nd. Furthermore, because of its construction, Krupp has been an honorary citizen of Capri since 1902 . However, it was only named after him in later years.

With the help of eight tight hairpin bends, the steep path overcomes a height difference of about a hundred meters and connects the Giardini di Augusto - the former gardens of the Emperor Augustus - with the coast of the Mediterranean . It also leads past the Torre Saracena , which is part of an old fortification. Krupp had the serpentine path laid out in order to be able to descend faster and more comfortably from his traditional accommodation in the luxury hotel Quisisana to Marina Piccola (the southern pier of Capris - since 1934 also a bathing area). His research ship to study marine biology anchored there, and the Grotta di Fra Felice - a favorite place of Krupp - was also located in the bay.

After Via Krupp was closed in 1976 for safety reasons - due to the risk of falling rocks - the path was later rehabilitated and reopened to the public on June 28, 2008. The construction work had to be interrupted several times before - many experts were called in to secure the steep, overhanging rock. A total of around seven million euros were invested to protect Via Krupp from falling rocks and landslides with steel nets.

The reopening ceremony took place in the presence of the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and the German Ambassador to Italy, Michael Steiner . Despite the rehabilitation of the overhanging rocks, boulders came loose again and again, which led to the path being temporarily closed. In 2014 Via Krupp was closed again due to falling rocks. The reopening announced for 2019 has been postponed indefinitely.
