Vibeke Larsen (* 1971 in Vassdalen , Narvik municipality ) is a Norwegian - Sami politician . Until 2017 she was a member of the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap), later she founded the Šiella party . Between 2005 and 2017 she was a member of the Norwegian Sameting , and from December 2016 she was its president.

education and profession

Larsen is trained in economics , marketing and sociology at college and university level. She worked as an account manager for the telecommunications company Telenor , as a wage clerk and as a self-employed businesswoman.

Political career

In 2005, Vibeke Larsen was first elected to the Norwegian Sami parliament, the Sameting . Between 2007 and 2009 she was a member of the parliamentary board, Sametingsråd , under Sametingspräsident Egil Olli from the Arbeiderpartiet. After the 2009 elections, she returned to parliament as an ordinary MP. For the 2013 election, she was the presidential candidate of her party, but she was again an ordinary member of the Sameting.

Presidency and leaving the party

On November 20, 2016, Larsen's party colleague and then Storting MP Helga Pedersen was nominated as a presidential candidate for the Sameting for the 2017 elections. This led to discussions in the Sami group of the Arbeiderpartiet, as Pedersen, in contrast to the Ap faction in Sameting , advocated mining in the region around Kvalsund .

After the then Sametings President Aili Keskitalo from Norske Samers Riksforbundet (NSR) failed to adopt a new budget in December 2016 , Larsen prompted a vote of no confidence in her. This vote went against Keskitalo and on December 9, 2016, Vibeke Larsen was elected as the new Speaker of Parliament in a coalition with Høyre and Árja . This made Larsen the first person in this position who did not speak any of the Sami languages . Her party colleague Helga Pedersen then withdrew as a top candidate. The reason she gave was that this action by Larsen and the Ap parliamentary group would have reduced the party's chances of success in the upcoming election.

On January 28, 2017, Larsen's party colleague and vice-president in Sametingsråd Ronny Wilhelmsen was nominated as the new top candidate of the labor party. Since Larsen himself had assumed to be the new top candidate, she resigned from her party and founded the new Šiella party . In addition, she removed Wilhelmsen from the Sametingsråd in her function as Sametings President. Larsen subsequently continued the presidency as a non-party.

Elections 2017

In the 2017 elections, Larsen's party ultimately ran in six of the nine constituencies, but failed to secure a seat.
