Vicarsford Cemetery Chapel

The Vicarsford Cemetery Chapel , also Lady Leng Memorial Chapel , is a grave church near the Scottish town of Drumoig in the Council Area Fife . In 1973 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists as an individual monument, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2010. In addition, the Vicarsford Cemetery Chapel, together with the surrounding buildings, forms a category B monument ensemble.

history

The chapel was built between 1895 and 1897. The local architect Thomas Martin Cappon is responsible for the design . Cappon was probably also involved in the planning of the surrounding cemetery established in 1890. Funerary churches are very rare in Scotland. Another example is the Murray Chapel in Lanark . Lady Leng founded the non-denominational church.

description

The Vicarsford Cemetery Chapel is isolated on a hill in the middle of the surrounding cemetery a few hundred meters north of Drumoig. Stylistically, the four-axis neo-Gothic building is strongly based on the French style of the 13th century Gothic , specifically on the design of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris . Pointed- arch tracery with leaded glass windows and quadrupeds run along the façades, which are structured by buttresses . The apse is polygonal. The entrance portal with eyelash protrudes on the east side . The church closes with a copper roof.
