Victoria Barracks (Werl)
The Victoria Barracks were former barracks in the Werl city forest .
history
Fort Victoria and Fort Louis, popularly known as Victoria Barracks , were two barracks that were located between Werl and Wickede in the Werl city forest on the B 63 . The facilities had been abandoned since 1994.
Previous use
From 1956 to 1970 the facility was used by the Canadian armed forces. The barracks and the accommodations of the single soldiers were housed here. The married soldiers lived with their families in the Canadian settlement in Werl. Even Canadian Forces Radio CAE (Canadian Army Europe) had its location here. This was one of the first Canadian radio stations in Germany. Up until 1970, FM broadcasts for around 16,000 Canadian soldiers and their families in Germany.
From 1970 to 1994 soldiers from the British Rhine Army were stationed in the barracks . Since the evacuation in 1994, the buildings such as the two churches, the former GLOBE cinema and the team quarters have fallen into disrepair. In autumn 2018 the city of Werl began to renovate the site and transform it into a recreational area.
