Vicus Grünwinkel
The vicus in Grünwinkel was a Roman civil settlement ( vicus ) in the area of what is now Karlsruhe 's Grünwinkel district .
The settlement was mostly in a loop of the Alb with the focus on the right of the river. The name is so far unknown.
At the end of the 19th century, in the “Sargäckern” on the left bank of the Alb, wall remnants, ledge bricks, heating tiles and other traces of settlement as well as a well were uncovered. Initially, these finds were assigned to a villa rustica . In 1927 a Roman cellar (ground plan 9.5 × 4.6 m) in today's Konradin-Kreutzer-Strasse 13/14 was examined and found among others. a. a consecration relief of the Celtic underworld gods ( Sucellus and Nantosuelta ) and parts of a Mercury statuette . Another stone cellar came to light at 23 Eckenerstraße. Traces of settlement came to light between Eckenerstrasse, Konradin-Kreutzer-Strasse and Albkapelle (right bank) as well as in Charlottenstrasse and Christian-Schneider-Strasse (left bank).
The vicus had its own brick factory with three ovens, which were probably outside the settlement. Two of these were cleared away in the 1920s, while the third is still preserved. They were located at today's Friedrich-Silcher-Strasse 16/17 and Daxlander Strasse 45/47.
The cemetery was located north of the village (area Zeppelinstraße 37/72, Eckenerstraße 1). During the archaeological investigation in 1922, 59 urn graves were found. The urns came from local production and are mostly reminiscent of pre-Roman vessel shapes. The latter could indicate a largely Celtic population. To the south of the Alb in the “Sargäckern” and “Am Anger” other cremation graves could possibly have been located.
The total size is estimated at approx. 300 × 400 m. The evidence of active use as a settlement site ends in the middle of the 3rd century.
