description

The covered market is on New Market Street to the north of Castle Douglas. The building was built around 1900 and is one of the best preserved historical market halls in Scotland. It has an unusual octagonal floor plan. Just like the building edges, the openings with red sandstone are set off from the cream-colored brick masonry. The two-winged entrance portal on the west side has a round arch and a final window . Two round, four-part lattice windows flank the portal. The building closes with a slate-covered tent roof with flat skylights and triangular ventilation outlets. The roof rests on all-round heavy corbels made of red sandstone. In the interior, the wooden fixtures and benches have largely been preserved in their original state.
