Four-way fight (speed skating)
In speed skating , in addition to single-track competitions, combinations of several, usually four, individual tracks are run. These are known as four-way fights . As of 2010 according to the rules of the DESG, the following regular competition combinations apply in the order of execution:
- the "mini four-way battle" over 500, 1500, 1000 and 3000 meters,
- the "Little Four Fight" over 500, 3000, 1500 and 5000 meters,
- the "Great Four Fight" over 500, 5000, 1500 and 10,000 meters,
- the "sprint four-way battle" over the two runs of 500 and 1000 meters.
In general, the four -way fights are also known as all-round multi-fights because of their character as a versatility test.
Scoring mode
For the ranking list of the competitors, the times of the individual runs are converted to the average for a 500-meter section in seconds and added to the corresponding values of the other three runs of the four-way competition to form a number of points (rounded down to the third decimal place). The runner with the lowest number of points is declared the winner and, if applicable, the record holder. The next ranked runners result from the next higher score values. The final ranking results exclusively from the average times converted to 500-meter distances, not from the placement in the individual races.
Example
The score of the world record in the great four-way battle set by Shani Davis in Calgary on March 18 and 19, 2006 was 145.742 points, which resulted from the following course times:
route | Time in minutes |
Time in seconds |
Time for 500 meters in seconds = score |
---|---|---|---|
500 meters | - | 35.17 | 35.17 |
5000 meters | 6: 10.49 | 370.49 | 37.049 |
1500 meters | 1: 42.68 | 102.68 | 34.226 |
10,000 meters | 13: 05.94 | 785.94 | 39.297 |
Total points | 145.742 |
history
The route lengths were originally set differently according to gender and age group. From 1949 to 1955, the women ran the distance combinations 500, 3000, 1000 and 5000 meters. In 1955, the ISU decided to no longer allow the 5000 meter route for women’s competitions. The "Great Four Fight" at that time was converted into the route combination of 500, 1500, 1000 and 3000 meters, today's "Little Four Fight" for women. In 1982, after the reintroduction of the 5000-meter route for women, a new route combination was introduced for their "Great Four Fight" with the sections of 500, 3000, 1500 and 5000 meters.
Shortened four-way fights
Starting from the "standard" four-way combat, there are shortened variants. Reason may be that a route z. B. was canceled due to bad weather. Shortened all-around competitions are also regular competitions.

Trivia
It can happen that two athletes have the same number of points except for the third decimal place after the last distance. In this case, the athlete who was faster on the longest distance must be classified in the front.
