history

The newspaper was founded under the title “Viernheimer Tageblatt” in 1949 by the brothers Willy, Richard and Hans Martin in the publishing house Johannes Martin Söhne OHG. Editor-in-chief was Willy J. Martin from 1949 to 1997. Before the publication of the VT, however, the "Viernheimer Mitteilungen" were published by this publisher on behalf of the municipality and later the city of Viernheim in the first years after the war. The “Viernheimer Tageblatt” continues the journalistic tradition of the newspaper “Viernheimer Anzeiger” (founded in 1911), which was founded by Johannes Martin XVII. (1883–1944) and was run as a publisher. The publisher of the "Viernheimer Anzeiger" took over the first Viernheimer Zeitung, founded in 1883, from its publisher and continued it as the "Viernheimer Anzeiger". The publisher had to officially cease its publication in 1936 due to the publisher's criticism of the regime. It was only after the end of the war that an independent local newspaper from Viernheim could be re-established by the sons of the old publisher in a new publishing house. In the 1980s the Johannes Martin Söhne OHG also took over the previously independent “Viernheimer Neue Volkszeitung” from the Friedrich Martin publishing house.

The publishing house was owned by the family for a long time. A far-reaching change in the shareholder structure of the publishing company took place in May 1997, when the previous co-shareholder Hans Nikolaus Martin became the sole shareholder following the departure of Willy and Richard Martin. A few years later he handed the publishing house over to his son Wolfgang Martin. Wolfgang Martin is also the founder of the Viernheimer Volksblatt . He also owns the Speyerer Morgenpost , the Speyerer Wochenpost , and has his own printing company. Since December 2014, no member of the Martin family has owned or managed the Viernheimer Tageblatt Viernheimer Verlagsservice GmbH, Mannheim.

In December 2014, the Darmstadt regional council had the daily newspaper's office at Rathausstrasse 43 sealed, as managing director Wolfgang Martin has been prohibited from doing business since October 2013 due to tax debts and unpaid social security contributions. During a check, the authorities found that the newspaper was still published.
