history

The stately villa was built in Art Nouveau style in 1911 by the Augsburg master builder Josef Brummer . The builder was the Gunzenheim-born farmer's son and trained baker Maximilian Straßer (1862–1929). He emigrated to the USA in 1892, where he made considerable wealth. The villa is named after Maximilian Strasser's mother. The building was equipped with the most modern technical achievements of the time. It already had a heating system, gas lighting and its own water pumping station.

Maximilian Straßer only lived in his villa for a few weeks a year when he visited his homeland. He bequeathed the area and $ 20,000 in cash to the Catholic Church through a generous donation. His condition was that a priest's apartment and a pastor's office in Gunzenheim be built in the villa. In November 1931, the then Bishop of Eichstätt , Johannes Leo von Mergel , had set up a branch in Gunzenheim . This decision was a clever “move”, otherwise the property would have passed to the heirs of Maximilian Strasser.

From 1946 to 1963 the building served u. a. a displaced priest as accommodation, later as a youth center. In 2001 the now neglected villa was renovated. The bishop emeritus of Eichstätt and Augsburg, Walter Mixa , has lived in the villa since 2010 , which is now called the episcopal house 'Barbara' . The basement rooms are used sporadically for other purposes (e.g. seminars, church choir rehearsals). The villa was broken into in March 2014. The perpetrator (s) stole a. Crosses and rings of the old bishop of Augsburg and Eichstätt.
