history

The house was built in 1927/28 according to plans by Otto Hochmiller and initially used by the architect Ernst Niederberger as a residential building with an office. In 1932 the doctor, Dr. Josef Sauter took over the house and set up his practice in Niederberger's former office; later son Ulrich inherited the house. On April 28, 1944, the Niederberger villa burned down after an air raid, but the residents saved it.

Villa ensemble Schmidstrasse

The villa ensemble in Schmidstrasse is reminiscent of a glamorous era in the history of Friedrichshafen. The Villa Niederberger is one of the youngest buildings to belong to the villa colony that was partially destroyed in the Second World War . The neighboring Villa Mittnacht at Schmidstrasse 1, for example, dates from around 1865. It was destroyed in an air raid. The surviving Villa Winz at Schmidstrasse 7 was built in 1915. It was designed by Paul Bonatz and Friedrich Eugen Scholer . The Villa Birkenmayer at Schmidstrasse 6, which Niederberger designed for the owner of a turpentine factory, has also been preserved. The Art Nouveau building dates from 1911. The house at Schmidstrasse 4 was also designed by Niederberger. Karl and Käthe Maybach once lived in the Art Nouveau villa from 1913/14 .
