Villa Rustica (Bennwil)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Villa Rustica von Bennwil is a Roman estate in the municipality of Bennwil in the canton of Basel-Land in Switzerland .

Roman remains were found in 1927 and 1935. From 1936 to 1937 there were then systematic excavations.

The villa was close to a stream. It was a rectangular building measuring 31 × 19.40 meters. In the center of the villa there was a possibly covered hall with a stove. There were various rooms on the two short sides. In a later construction phase, a bathroom was built in the south-west corner of the villa. It consisted of three rooms. In one of them, the remains of the tub and a lead pipe outlet were still preserved. Another room in the bathroom had hypocausts and was decorated with a white wall painting and a simple mosaic. So far only one outbuilding is known, which stood about 60 meters south of the manor house.

The manor was founded in the first half of the first century and abandoned in the first half of the third century.
