Villa Rustica (Chilgrove 2)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Villa Rustica in Chilgrove valley in Sussex ( England ) was unearthed in 1965 in large part. It is referred to as Villa Chilgrove 2 in the excavation publication as there is another Villa Rustica nearby called Villa Chilgrove 1 .

The oldest remains on the site of the villa date to the end of the first century AD. These are two wooden buildings that stood within a fence. In a second phase, the villa consisted of at least five rooms (in a row) with a corridor in front. This phase cannot yet be dated. At the end of the third century the villa was further expanded. It was now a flint building with a corridor at the front and several rooms behind. A fourth phase of the villa dates back to the first quarter of the fourth century. The villa was expanded considerably. The actual residential building remained largely unchanged, but was furnished with simple mosaics without decor ( opus tessellatum ). A large barn was built next to the house and a bathhouse was built on the left. The barn also had three rooms, which were probably used as living quarters, but two rooms are decorated with a simple mosaic.

The villa was abandoned at the end of the fourth century.
