Alec Down

Alec Down (born 1914 in Gosport ; † December 25, 1995 ) was a British archaeologist .

Alec Down initially served in the army, studied engineering in London after World War II and worked as an engineer until the early 1970s. A visit to the Roman villa in Bignor sparked his interest in archeology . In 1958 he took part in an excavation and met the British archaeologist Barry Cunliffe . In the following year, he was overseeing a city excavation in Chichester and was involved in various emergency excavations in the city over the next few years. In 1974 he became a full-time archaeologist for the Chichester District Council(of Chichester City Council). He led emergency excavations in the city but also in the region, where he excavated a number of Roman villas. He published his excavation results in various volumes.
