Villa Schmidt in Kehl

The Villa Schmidt is an elaborately designed town house in Kehl that was built in 1914 and is a listed building. It lies at the foot of the Europabrücke and at the northern end of the garden of the two banks .

history

The villa was built in 1914 to a design by the architects Mahr and Markwort on the base of part of the former fortifications of the railway bridge. Until 1944 it was the home of the Ludwig and Agnes Schmidt family. From 1945 to 1992 it housed the French military administration. In the run-up to the State Garden Show in 2004 , the city of Kehl became the owner of the villa and renovated it. In the area, terraces leading to the Rhine were created. Since that time there has been a restaurant in the Villa Schmidt.

Family Ludwig and Agnes Schmidt

Agnes Schmidt (1870–1948) is the daughter of Ludwig and Agnes Trick. Her father Ludwig set up a cellulose factory in Kehl in 1883 , which developed into the city's largest employer with 500 employees until his death in 1900. In the following years, his wife Agnes Trick and their four daughters became shareholders of the Trick pulp mill. Agnes Schmidt's husband, the professional officer Ludwig Schmidt (1865–1928), who held this office until the end of his life, became the first managing director. The couple had two sons and a daughter. Agne's sister Elisabeth Trick was married to Hermann Dietrich , the former mayor of Kehler and temporary vice chancellor in the Weimar Republic, who became another partner after the early death of his wife in 1921.

The tedder

Right next to Villa Schmidt is Die Heuwenderin , a nearly 2 meter tall bronze figure by the Strasbourg sculptor Albert Schultz (1871–1952) from 1906. Agnes Trick gave this figure to the city of Kehl in 1908 for the 25th anniversary of the Trick pulp factory. At first it stood on the square in front of the train station, which was later named Agnesplatz. In 1938 she was transferred to the local court because of the construction of the Westwall bunker . The bronze figure has been considered lost since 1944. A replica was made from the plaster cast of the original, which was installed in the foyer of the Kehl town hall in 1981. It was given its current location in the run-up to the 2004 State Garden Show.
