The Pukguksong-1 is a submarine-based medium - range ballistic missile developed in North Korea . Abroad it is sometimes called KN-11 or Polaris-1 . Depending on the transcription , it is also written Pukkuksong-1 or Bukgeuksong-1 . Pukguksong means polar star in Korean , hence the western name as Polaris-1 .

In late 2014, North Korea first announced the launch of a new submarine-based ballistic missile. A total of eleven test flights or take-offs had been completed by the end of 2016, but many of them failed. The first successful flight over a distance of 500 km did not take place until August 24, 2016 at the last take-off. According to Korean information, the Pukguksong-1 should be able to transport nuclear warheads . The rocket is to be used by the Sinpo class , a successor to the Golf class , which is currently under construction .
