Lists on the subject |
The Hwasong-12 , also known as the KN-17 , is a medium-range ballistic missile currently under development in North Korea . In the past, an R-17 missile that was further developed in North Korea was temporarily referred to by the US armed forces as the KN-17, which can lead to confusion.
It was not until 2017 that North Korean media reported about the Hwasong-12. Little is known about the exact structure. According to pictures, it is a single-stage rocket without stabilizing fins, but with control nozzles. Analysts suspect that the Hwasong-12 is a test version for the first stage of the Hwasong-14 and should not be used as a stand-alone missile.
There were a total of six tests of the Hwasong-12 by September 2017. While the first three failed and the rockets exploded or crashed after a short time, the fourth launch was successful. The rocket flew to a distance of 787 km in 30 minutes and reached a maximum altitude of 2,111 km. With a warhead, a range of 4,500 km would be possible with a less steep flight path. The fifth start was also successful. The rocket flew over the Japanese island of Hokkaido, reached a maximum altitude of 550 km and landed 2200 km east of Hokkaido in the Pacific, the flight distance was 3700 km.
