The Pukguksong-2 is a medium-range ballistic missile currently under development in North Korea . Depending on the transcription , it is also written Pukkuksong-2 or Bukgeuksong-2 . Alternative designation KN-15.
Technology and development
The Pukguksong-2 was first launched on February 12, 2017 for a test flight. It was fired in northwest North Korea and flew about 500 km eastward, where it fell in the Sea of Japan . A warhead was not on board. Initially, the South Korean military suspected a test of the BM25 Musudan . However, North Korea announced the successful first test of the new Pukguksong-2 after it was shot down. In fact, the video recordings of the take-off did not show a typical orange-red jet of fire, such as that created by the Musudan's liquid fuel , but a yellowish jet. It is considered a land-based development of the Pukguksong-1 , which is fired from submarines. According to Korean sources, the rocket, like its predecessor, is capable of transporting nuclear warheads.
The rocket is launched from a container by means of gas pressure; the solid rocket engine only ignites in the air. According to analysts, the launch vehicle is a Korean in-house development.
