Vincenzo Virga (born September 11, 1936 in Trapani , Sicily , Italy ) is a powerful Sicilian mafioso . He has been the boss of the Trapani family since 1982.

Life

Vincenzo Virga was one of the subaltern forces of the Trapani Mafia family in the 1970s. From the middle of the decade, the split of the Cosa Nostra into two rival factions became clear. On the one hand there was the alliance of Stefano Bontade , Gaetano Badalamenti and Salvatore Inzerillo , which had dominated until then, and on the other there were the rising Corleonesi, led by Salvatore Riina and Bernardo Provenzano . The Trapani family boss, Salvatore Minore , was closely allied with Stefano Bontade. His subordinate Vincenzo Virga, like many other mafiosi, secretly joined the Corleonesi. In 1981 the Second Mafia War broke out, in which the Corleonesi wiped out their opponents in a bloodbath. In 1982, Minore and his loyal followers were also murdered. Vincenzo Virga was appointed the new regent of the family by the Corleonesi.

After Riina's arrest in 1993, Provenzano became the new "boss of the bosses". Instead of the regular commission , the members of which were mostly in prison, he appointed a management college of seven bosses with whom he directed the Cosa Nostra. Virga, who was one of the most important money launderers of the Cosa Nostra, belonged to this college. After years of escaping, he was arrested in February 2001 in a farmhouse near Trapani. He has been in custody since then.
