Viremia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Viremia is the presence of viruses in the blood . This occurs with almost all virus infections for a period of time. The concentration of viruses in the blood or serum is also known as the viral load .

Viraemia is often preceded by the destruction of the host cells in which the viruses have reproduced. Often the viraemia is accompanied by fever and chills in the course of the immune reaction due to an increase in interleukins 1 and 6 .

The equivalent to viraemia is found in bacteria in bacteremia and in parasites in parasitemia .
