Vir philippinensis is a species of shrimp belonging tothe rock and partner shrimp family (Palaemonidae). It isnativeto the Philippines in the western Pacific , a few centimeters long and transparent, as well as a commensal of hard corals , especially Plerogyra sinuosa .

features

Vir philippinensis is a small and slender partner shrimp with a slightly compressed body. The carapace is smooth, hairless and has a well-developed rostrum that clearly protrudes above the bases of the antennae. The rostrum is slightly curved upwards and has 5 to 8 small, upwardly directed, pointed teeth. The abdomen is also smooth. The third abdominal segment is not drawn forward up and back. The pleura of the first three segments are broadly rounded, those of the fourth and fifth are rounded backwards. The telson is about twice as long as the sixth abdominal segment and about three times as long as it is wide. There are three pairs of elongated spines at the far end of the phone. On the first and second pair of striding legs there are small, slender scissors that are slightly hairy. The remaining pairs of striding legs are relatively long and slender. The uropods are slightly shorter than the telson, their exopodite is slightly longer than the endopodite.

The body of Vir philippinensis is mostly transparent. There is a thin, blue-black line along the striding legs , the third maxilliped, and all antennas.

distribution and habitat

Vir philippinensis is native to the Philippines and was first discovered near Cebu . It lives on hard corals at depths of 25 to 30 meters. The type specimens were found on the bladder coral Plerogyra sinuosa , paratypes lived on Fungia sp. and an unidentified coral.

Systematics

Vir philippinensis was discovered by A. Svoboda during a dive in 1980 and was first described together with AJ Bruce in 1984 . At that time, the authors placed them in the genus Vir, which was considered a monotype with Vir orientalis . Today six species belong to this genus. Vir philippinensis differs from the other five, among other things, in its specific habitat and the shape of the spines at the rear end of the Telsons .
