Virgílio da Silva Guterres (fighting name Lamukan ) is a journalist from East Timor . Since 2016 he has been the President of the Press Council in East Timor ( Portuguese Conselho de Imprensa ).

Career

Guterres was active as a journalist since 1998. He was a co-founder of the Revista Talitakum and wrote columns for Hori Otas Hori in Tetum . As head of the newspaper Vox Populi , Guterres supported the Conselho Nacional de Resistência Timorense (CNRT) in the independence referendum in East Timor in 1999 . At the same time, Guterres worked for Si @ r News , the news agency of the independence movement. From 2000 to 2001 he wrote local reports. In the course of time Guterres got to know the journalistic craft in some media outside of East Timor, for example in 1998 with the Jakarta Post . When triple j radio the ABC in Darwin he completed in 2000 a "post-conflict Workshop" for journalists. In 2001, Guterres took an advanced reporting course from the Tomson Foundation at Cardiff University .

Together with others, Guterres founded the Associação de Jornalistas de Timor-Leste (AJTL) and was its first president from 2001 to 2011. At the same time, he headed the Board of Directors of Radio-Televisão Timor Leste (RTTL) from 2003 to 2005. From 2004 to 2006, Guterres was General Director of RTTL. Guterres represented the AJTL at the South East Asia Press Alliance (SEAPA) and has been the secretary of SEAPA since 2014. His term of office runs until 2020. From 2010 to 2018 Guterres was secretary of the East Timor Red Cross .

Guterres was elected in 2016 by the East Timor’s National Parliament as one of its representatives in the newly created Press Council. At its first meeting on March 31, 2016, Guterres was elected President of the Council. The swearing-in took place on May 10, 2016. The term of office of the council members lasts until 2020.
