Virtual research environment

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A virtual or digital research environment is a working platform for cooperative, simultaneous research activity in different locations. In terms of content, it supports the entire research process, while technologically it is based primarily on software services and communication networks. Resources of international, national and local research infrastructures as well as human resources are integrated in virtual research environments. In principle, virtual research environments should be able to be used in all disciplines. The current development is still at the beginning and is characterized by developments based on project-specific requirements.

Goals of virtual research environments

Virtual research environments are used to achieve research goals more efficiently and / or in new ways. Qualitative improvements are possible through the development of new collaborations or the re-use of methods, data and services by other research groups and specialist disciplines. Objectives can also be increased efficiency through working in networks or through the joint production and use of research data.

Elements of virtual research environments

The use of virtual research environments depends heavily on the respective discipline-specific requirements. In general, tools to support collaborative work are the focus. These can include, for example:

  • Wikis and forums
  • Databases and electronic publication platforms
  • Opportunities for distributed writing in a group
  • Opportunities to conduct experiments together
  • Access to distant devices and probes

Promotion of virtual research environments

The creation of virtual research environments in Great Britain is largely funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). In Germany, the DFG offers the “Virtual Research Environments” funding program in the area of “Scientific Literature Supply and Information Systems (LIS)”.
