Friedrich Thoms (born February 15, 1920 ) was a football player in the upper league of the East German sports committee . He played there for ZSG Anker / BSG Motor Wismar .

Athletic career

Immediately after the Second World War, Wismar determined the level of football in northern East Germany. In 1948 the rise of Wismar began with the Mecklenburg vice championship of SG Süd behind SG Schwerin. 28-year-old Friedrich Thoms stood in Wismar's ranks. As a runner-up, Wismar was qualified for the soccer east zone championship, which was held for the first time in 1948 , but was eliminated 3-1 after the first game against the later runner-up Freiimfelde Halle. Thoms was also involved when SG Süd became Mecklenburg soccer champions in 1949. In the decisive away game against SG Schwerin in front of 12,000 spectators, the Ostseestädter won 1-0 with Thoms as the right runner . The second attempt in the east zone championship in 1949 went wrong again with a 10:10 defeat against the eventual finalist Fortuna Erfurt.

Nevertheless, Wismar had qualified as national champion for the first season of the newly established upper league of the East German sports committee. In this 1949/50 season, the Wismarers, now playing as ZSG anchor, could only fight to stay in the league. At the end of the season, a decider to stay in the league was required between Anker Wismar and the tied SG Altenburg Nord. In front of 12,000 spectators in Magdeburg, the ZSG lost, this time with Thoms as middle runner, 2: 3 and had to relegate to the second-rate GDR league . Thoms had previously played 24 of the 26 played point games and was usually called up in the right midfield.

Thoms completed 15 of the 16 point games in the GDR league season 1950/51 and scored his first point game goal in the GDR-wide league in a 3-0 victory over Chemie Großräschen on matchday 7. It stayed with this one goal, but Wismar reached the playoff against the tied SG Volkspolizei Potsdam for the return to the league. As usual, Thoms played in midfield and was able to celebrate his return to the league after a 2-1 win in front of 6,500 spectators in Stendal. The second league season was also a battle for relegation for the Wismar team, who are now competing as BSG Motor. He was lost after 22 defeats. This time, Thoms was only in 19 of the 36 point games and had no fixed regular position in all parts of the team. On the 19th matchday, December 30, 1951, he scored his only top division goal, with which he scored the equalizer to 1: 1 against the SG Volkspolizei Dresden.

For the 31-year-old it was the last season for Motor Wismar. Within three seasons in national football, Thoms had played 58 of 78 possible point games, 43 of them in the major league.
