Conception of the museum

The museum works with an oral history approach by presenting recordings of contemporary witnesses who tell of their personal fates during the period of political repression in Belarus. As a result, the museum covers a part of the history of Belarus that is not covered by the official historiography in the country.

The museum exhibits mainly consist of audio and video recordings, photos, documents and statistics related to the oppression in Belarus. Chronicles and historical articles are also presented.

The museum currently has seven exhibition rooms:

  • Soviet myths
  • Chronology of repression
  • Victim of repression
  • The system of oppression
  • Anti-Soviet Resistance
  • Reparation
  • Places of remembrance

In addition to the narrative interviews, the special features of the museum include interactive maps of the NKVD camps in Belarus and memorials. The museum also offers a search function that can be used to search for victims of Soviet oppression from currently more than 30,000 records.
