Virtuoso

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Virtutes (Sing .: Virtus) is a medical-historical term. It describes properties, according to Paracelsus and Giambattista della Porta, "powers" inherent in plants (and animals) that can be used medicinally. In their research in the 16th century, both doctors assumed that these medically effective forces can be recognized by the appearance of medicinal plants, the so-called signa . They postulated that plants that look similar also have similar effects. This teaching was continued at the beginning of the 17th century, for example by Oswald Croll . However, it came under fire at the end of the same century, but was revived in the 19th century by representatives of medical "outsider methods".
