Viscotoxins

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The viscotoxin denotes a group of toxins from the Weißbeerigen mistletoe ( Viscum album ).

properties

Viscotoxins are small, cysteine- rich, cationic peptides of about 5 kDa from the group of thionins . In addition to mistletoe lectins, they are the cause of the toxic effect . They are cytotoxic to cells from various kingdoms such as animals , fungi and bacteria . Viscotoxin A3 is presumably a pore-forming toxin . Viscotoxins are found in the leaves and stems of European mistletoe.

Viscotoxins are a component of mistletoe extracts that are used in chemotherapy .
