Viscount De L'Isle , of Penshurst in the County of Kent , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The Viscount family residence is Penshurst Place near Tonbridge in Kent.

Award

The title was created on January 12, 1956 for former House of Commons and Secretary of State of the Air Ministry William Sidney, 6th Baron De L'Isle and Dudley . He was Governor General of Australia from 1961 to 1965 .

Subordinate title

The first Viscount had inherited the title Baron De L'Isle and Dudley , of Penshurst in the County of Kent, from his grandfather in 1945 , which was awarded to his ancestor Philip Sidney on January 13, 1835 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . He also inherited the title of Baronet , of Penshurst in the County of Kent, which had been given to the father of the 1st Baron, John Shelley-Sidney (1771-1849) on December 12, 1818 in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Both titles have been subordinate titles to the respective Viscount since 1956.
