José Ângelo Cottinelli Telmo (born November 13, 1897 in Lisbon , † September 18, 1948 in Cascais ) was a Portuguese architect and film director .

Life

In 1932 Cottinelli designed the south and south-east train stations in Lisbon
In 1945 Cottinelli designed the Vila Real do Santo António train station on the Spanish-Portuguese border in the Algarve

Cottinelli Telmo studied architecture at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. As part of his studies, which he finished in 1920, was involved in the production of the films Mal de Espanha and Malmequer , both of which appeared in 1918. In 1932 Cottinelli Telmo designed the Tobis Portuguesa film studio in the Lumiar district of Lisbon together with AP Richard . The following year, Telmos directed the film A Canção de Lisboa , in which, alongside Vasco Santana , António Silva and Beatriz Costa , the director Manoel de Oliveira was seen in an acting role. It was the first sound film to be produced entirely in Portugal and ushered in a high phase of Portuguese cinema in the 1930s to 1950s.

Nevertheless, Cottinelli Telmo is best known as an architect. In 1922 he designed the pavilion of honor for the world exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, in 1929 the Portuguese pavilion at the world exhibition in Seville and in 1945 the standard electric factory in Alcântara (Lisbon). But Cottinelli's railway buildings are particularly well-known; he designed, among other things, the train stations in Barcelos , Vila Real de Santo António , the signal tower of the train station in Pinhal Novo and the ship terminal at Lisbon’s Terreiro do Paço .

Cottinelli was also the chief architect of the "Exhibition of the Portuguese World" in Lisbon in 1940. For this he designed the Praça do Império , the Porta da Fundação and, together with the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos in Belém .

From 1938 to 1942, Cottinelli Telmo headed the Portuguese magazine Arquitectos . He died on September 18, 1948 in a shipwreck.
