The Praça do Império , in English "Reichsplatz", in the Lisbon municipality of Belém consists essentially of the square park Jardim da Praça do Império . The square is bounded by the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (north), the Jardim de Belém and Jardim Afonso de Albuquerque (east), the Avenida da Índia street and the Linha de Cascais railway (south) and the Centro Cultural de Belém (west). The Padrão dos Descobrimentos (south) and the Palácio de Belém presidential palace (north-east) are also in the immediate vicinity .

José Ângelo Cottinelli Telmo designed the square together with the fountain ( Fonte Monumental ) in honor of the Portuguese colonial empire for the exhibition of the Portuguese world in 1940. The central fountain has a diameter of almost 30 meters. In the surrounding green areas, the coats of arms of 32 former provinces of the colonial empire are depicted with plants. Previously there were large areas of sand on the site, which gave it the name Praia do Restelo (“Restelo Beach”).
