Viscount Hardinge

Viscount Hardinge , of Lahore and of Kings Newton in the County of Derby , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The Viscount family residence is Broadmere House near Basingstoke in Hampshire .

Award

The title was bestowed on the officer, Governor General of India and politician Sir Henry Hardinge on May 2, 1846 . He had previously commanded the victorious British troops in the Battle of Sobraon against the Sikhs . He later became Commander in Chief of the British Army .

Subordinate title

The 6th Viscount inherited the title Baronet , of Belle Isle in the County of Fermanagh in 1986 from a distant relative . This was given on August 4, 1801 to an uncle of the 1st Viscount. At the time of the award it was expressly determined that the title could also be inherited by brothers of the 1st Baronet and their male descendants in the absence of male descendants. The Baronetcy is now listed as a subordinate title to the Viscount dignity.
