Viscount Hill , of Hawkstone and of Hardwicke in the County of Salop , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award

The title was created on September 27, 1842 shortly before his death for the military Rowland Hill, 1st Baron Hill . This had distinguished himself in the Peninsular War and the Battle of Waterloo . Since 1828 he had been in command of the British Army .

Since Hill had no male descendants, the award was made with a special note that the male descendants of his older brother Sir John Hill, 3rd Baronet († 1824), could inherit the title, which was also the case a few months later .

Subordinate title

The 1st Viscount had already been promoted to peer on May 17, 1814 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom as Baron Hill , of Almaraz and of Hawkstone in the County of Salop. This title was awarded without any special inheritance regulation and expired on his death in 1842 due to the lack of male descendants.

Because it became foreseeable that he would leave no children, he was also awarded the title Baron Hill , of Almarez and of Hawkestone and Hardwicke in the County of Salop on January 16, 1816 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , with the special inheritance regulation that his older brother and his male descendants can inherit this title. At the death of the 1st Viscount, this barony and the Viscount title passed to his nephew Sir Rowland Hill, 4th Baronet, in accordance with the special inheritance regulations. In 1824 he had inherited the title of Baronet , of Hawkestone in the County of Salop, from his father . This Baronetcy had been conferred on January 20, 1727 in the Baronetage of Great Britain to the grandfather of the first Viscount. The dignity was actually intended for his uncle Richard Hill of Hawkstone , an important diplomat and advisor to George of Denmark and Norway , the husband of Queen Anne . However, this died before the award. The three titles have been united since 1842.

Others

The 3rd Viscount had his family name added to Clegg-Hill after his mother's family in 1874 with a royal license .
