Viscount Lisle
Viscount Lisle was a hereditary British title of nobility awarded six times in the Peerage of England .
Awards
The title was first created on October 30, 1451 for John Talbot, 1st Baron Isle . He had already been raised to Baron Lisle on July 26, 1444 by Writ of Summons . When his son, the 2nd Viscount, died on March 20, 1470, the Viscountcy was extinguished and the barony fell in Abeyance between his two sisters.
In the second bestowal, the title was created on June 28, 1483 for Sir Edward Gray . He was married to the older of the two aforementioned sisters, Elizabeth Talbot , who had been confirmed as 3rd Baroness Lisle when the younger sister died. The Viscount title expired on the death of his son, the 2nd Viscount, on September 9, 1504, the barony fell to his daughter Elizabeth Gray , as the 5th Baroness.
On May 15, 1513, the title was recreated for the third time to Sir Charles Brandon , on the occasion of his engagement to Elizabeth Gray, 5th Baroness Lisle. On February 1, 1514 he was also raised to the Duke of Suffolk . In 1523 he had to renounce the Viscount title because firstly the engagement had been canceled and secondly the bride at that time died in 1519. The title was instead given in the fourth bestowal on April 25, 1523 to the husband of aunt Elizabeth Gray 6th Baroness Lisle, Arthur Plantagenet , an illegitimate son of King Edward IV . The title expired on his childless death on March 3, 1542.
In the fifth bestowal, the title was bestowed on March 12, 1543 to Lord High Admiral John Dudley . On his mother's side, he was a grandson of the 1st Viscount's second award. On February 16, 1547 he was also elevated to Earl of Warwick and on October 11, 1551 Duke of Northumberland . As guardian for the minor King Edward VI. he became de facto regent of England from 1549 and was finally convicted of high treason and executed on August 22, 1553. The Dukedom and the Viscountcy were revoked and extinguished.
In the sixth bestowal on May 4, 1605, the title Viscount L'Isle was created for Robert Sydney, 1st Baron Sydney . He had already been raised to Baron Sydney , of Penshurst on May 13, 1603 , and on August 2, 1618, he was also given the title of Earl of Leicester . The titles expired on the death of his descendant, the 7th Earl, on July 7th, 1743.
