Earl Winterton
Earl Winterton , in the County of Galway , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .
Award
The title was created on February 12, 1766 for the House of Commons Edward Garth-Turnour, 1st Baron Winterton . Together with the Earldom he was given the subordinate title Viscount Turnour , of Gort in the County of Galway. As early as April 10, 1761 he had been raised to Baron Winterton , of Gort in the County of Galway. The titles belong to the Peerage of Ireland. When his mother died in 1744, he had adopted her maiden name Turnour .
The 6th Earl was given the title Baron Turnour , of Shillinglee in the County of Sussex on February 15, 1952 . This title belonged to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, unlike the Irish titles, was associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords . This barony became extinct when the 6th Earl died childless on August 27, 1962. The earldom and the other titles went to his third cousin, the Canadian Ronald Turnour , as the 7th Earl.
The historic ancestral home of the Earls was Shillinglee in West Sussex .
