The title was created around 1443 by King James II for the Lord Chancellor of Scotland Sir William Crichton of that Ilk . His grandson, the 3rd Lord, was a supporter of Alexander Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany and had to flee into exile in France after the failure of his rebellion. In 1484 he was ostracized and his titles and lands were confiscated.
On August 29, 1642, the title was recreated by King Charles I for James Crichton , along with the parent title Viscount of Frendraught . His younger son, the 4th Viscount, fought on the side of the Jacobites during the Glorious Revolution , for which he was ostracized in 1690 and his titles were revoked.
