Viscount of Strathallan is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

Award and history of the title

The title was created on August 16, 1686 for the politician and military man William Drummond . He was the second son of John Drummond, 2nd Lord Maderty , of the Drummond clan . Together with the Viscount title he was awarded the subordinate title Lord Drummond of Cromlix .

His son, the 2nd Viscount, inherited the subordinate title 4th Lord Maderty from his uncle on January 20, 1692 .

The 4th Viscount, like his son, who later became the 5th Viscount, took part in the Jacobite revolt of 1745 . By parliamentary resolution of April 18, 1746, both were ostracized ( Bill of Attainder ), on condition that they would not surrender by July 12, 1746. This deadline came too late for the 4th Viscount, as he had already died on April 16, 1746 in the Battle of Culloden . His son fled to France after the battle and lost his titles and lands with effect from April 18, 1746.

The younger son of his brother, James Drummond , finally obtained on June 17, 1824 that the title of the Act of Parliament as 6th Viscount was restored to him. In part, the legal act is also understood as a retroactive lifting of the ostracism and James Drummond is counted accordingly as the 8th Viscount.

His great-grandson, the 9th Viscount, inherited the title of 6th Earl of Perth and 9th Lord Drummond on the death of his distant relative George Drummond, 5th Earl of Perth in 1902 . The Viscountcy has since been a subordinate title of the respective Earl of Perth. Today's title holder has been his great-nephew John Drummond, 9th Earl of Perth as 12th Viscount , since 2002 .
